U.S. Department Of Labor Awards TCSG $4.85 Million in Strengthening Community College Training Grants

ATLANTA, GA—The U.S. Department of Labor (USDOL) announced the award of $4.85 million to a consortium of Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) colleges to help meet labor market demands for a skilled workforce.

The “Strengthening Community Colleges Training Grants” aim to address the skill development needs of employers and to support workers in gaining skills and transition quickly from unemployment to employment. The grants also build the capacity of community and technical colleges to address challenges associated with the Coronavirus pandemic, such as expanding online and technology-enabled learning.

“One of the Peach State’s greatest economic strengths is our workforce,” said Governor Brian Kemp. “As we continue to mitigate the economic impact of COVID-19, it is critical that we build on that strength to ensure Georgians are able to find work and opportunity in the days ahead. Our economic development team continues to announce projects in every region of the state, and these grants will help our technical colleges ensure businesses find a team of skilled, hardworking Georgians ready to meet their needs no matter where they locate.”

The consortium will work with workforce development partners and employer partners to train a broad spectrum of workers, including dislocated workers, incumbent workers, and new entrants to the workforce. The industries of focus in Georgia are healthcare, information technology, and manufacturing.

“As Georgia recovers from the impact of the Coronavirus, our technical colleges play a vital role in training the workforce that business and industry needs,” said TCSG Commissioner, Greg Dozier. “We are extremely grateful for this grant provided by The U.S. Department of Labor as it will provide us with the resources necessary to get more people skilled with industry-recognized credentials and back to work in some of Georgia’s leading sectors.”

TCSG’s consortium partners are as follows:

Savannah Tech selected as finalist for pre-apprenticeship adult education grant

SAVANNAH, Ga. — Savannah Technical College (STC) Adult Education entered the Rethink Adult Education Challenge, a $750,000 competition to advance pre-apprenticeships. STC Adult Education has made it to the final round as one of only two in Georgia and one of the 95 national finalists in the challenge from a range of industries, including manufacturing, healthcare, and technology.

As a finalist, STC Adult Education will have access to digital resources — such as case studies, activities, and webinars with subject matter experts — to help develop their detailed pre-apprenticeship program proposal. The challenge will award $250,000 to the grand-prize winner, and up to five runners-up will each receive at least $100,000.

The STC Adult Education program entered this challenge to address the gap between student knowledge and skills, and the manufacturing knowledge and skills needed in Georgia’s coastal region. The New Road to Manufacturing Integrated Pre-Apprenticeship program will better prepare non-traditional adults for apprenticeships and manufacturing career opportunities by providing them with the English language and mathematics knowledge, safety, critical thinking, and hands-on manufacturing workplace skills. This will connect students to the college’s existing registered apprenticeship programs with area employers, new apprenticeship programs, and qualify them for open positions with area manufactures.

Savannah Tech’s Adult Education Program serves those who need to improve their basic literacy and math skills, improve their oral and written English, practice for the GED® test to attain a high school equivalency credential, and prepare for college. Instructors also help students with science and social studies test preparation for GED® testing. STC teaches adult education classes in the morning, afternoon, evening and online. They are offered in Bryan, Chatham, Effingham and Liberty Counties with multiple locations in each community.

Adult education classes for HSE and GED®-prep are currently free for all U.S. citizens. To register for free HSE-prep classes, call 912.443.5446 or visit www.savannahtech.edu/FreeGEDClasses. For GED® testing information, go to www.ged.com to sign up to take test or go to www.savannahtech.edu/testingcenter to learn more about our testing locations.

VFW opens Veteran Service Officer site at Savannah Tech

Savannah Technical College is one of five sites in Chatham County with Veteran Service Officers (VSO) that help wounded warriors with disability claims. The new site is located in the Veterans Service Center at the Savannah Campus (5717 White Bluff Road, 31405).

The volunteer VSOs help veterans in all service branches with both in-person and virtual sessions. They specialize in disability claims, using their expertise to help guide veterans through the system.

VSOs are required to go through extensive training at their own expense to understand the disability regulations and guide other veterans. They offer advice and assistance to expedite claim submission. They also help find out why a claim was denied and help veterans resubmit “VA Determination.”

One of the volunteers is the 2014 Chatham County Veteran of the Year Frank Mullis, a Vietnam wounded warrior who has been assisting veterans for nearly 15 years.

“Wounded warriors need and deserve to speed up their receipt of necessary physical rehabilitation and occupational re-training to regain their ability to support their families and regain their dignity,” said Mullis.

The other four veteran service officer sites are located at the Savannah Veterans Administration clinic, Savannah Vet Center, the Elk’s Lodge and at the GSU Armstrong campus.

For more information about Veteran Services Officer services at Savannah Tech visit: www.savannahtech.edu/VFW-veteran or email VAclaims@savannahtech.edu to schedule an appointment.

Savannah Technical College has the highest military-affiliated enrollment in TCSG. One in four STC students is a veteran, active duty service member, or a military dependent/spouse. The College has been ranked one of the top Best for Vets public technical and career colleges in the U.S. by Military Times. Marketing Management students give “shark tank” style pitch as final exam

SAVANNAH, GA – Savannah Technical College prepares students with hands-on training, which leads to non-traditional final exams. Professional Selling and Entrepreneurship students will apply what they’ve learned this semester with a “shark tank” style presentation plus business plan or manuscript as their final exam representing one-third of their overall grade.

“The shark-tank style pitch competition that we are using for the professional selling and entrepreneurship programs have really amped the fun and excitement for students,” said Savannah Technical College adjunct-instructor Catherine Blake. “Our students are often military veterans and career changers. The pitch gives them the confidence they need to crush the interview, land the job or close new business. I like to think that we are changing lives and giving some a fresh start in life.”

Students are given criteria for their pitch to either land their dream job, go for a promotion from within, land an investor or important customer. The presentations are timed and presented to the entire class, where other students act as the “sharks.” Students receive their official grade from the instructor. To add to the suspense of the student presentations, the other students will score each other to determine the overall winner. The class will also provide an opportunity for a “Leadership Award” for the student who has demonstrated good character, professionalism, and the spirit to help others.

“This professional selling class has significantly increased my confidence in my ability to sell and present myself to others,” said STC Marketing student and U.S. Marine Corps reservist Corporal Xavier Hollie. “I highly recommend this class to anyone, regardless of what degree you pursue.”

STC Hospitality student Piea Delos Santos said: “Thanks to the Professional Selling class we are better prepared for job interviews. We are sure to land the job because we were given a step-by-step process. This class has helped me become less anxious speaking in front of a crowd, which is a big deal to me since I’m a very reserved and quiet person.”

Last semester in the Professional Selling class, students Amaya Baker and Gemya Gadson landed internal promotions based on their “shark tank” style final exam presentations. Another student, Bronwyn Dawson pitched her business plan to an imaginary official for the City of Savannah. Dawson is an U.S. Army veteran, will graduate from Savannah Technical College in May 2021 with a Marketing Management degree and was a candidate for “BizPitch Savannah 2020” Entrepreneurial Competition presented by SCORE.

“STC’s marketing program has helped me tremendously prepare to open my business,” STC Marketing Management and U.S. Army active duty Sergeant Varquesha Henderson. “I’ve gained valuable knowledge and skills that will help me run my proposed business successfully.”

Entrepreneurship and Professional Selling are included in STC’s Marketing programs (degree and diploma).  Both courses may be taken as business-type electives in the Business Management program. Entrepreneurship is offered as a specialization in Marketing and also as a technical certificate of credit (TCC). Professional selling is required for Marketing and is an elective for Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management. Entrepreneurship is offered in the fall semester only. Professional Selling will be offered in Spring 2021, where classes begin on January 13.
